In the late 1980s, Rolex unveiled the ref. 16234 as an upgraded choice for the Datejust, featuring a fluted gold bezel.

The ref. 16234 was among the initial Datejust models with five-digit references, boasting a sapphire crystal as a notable enhancement. From the late '80s until the mid-2000s, it incorporated the brand's patented "jumping date" mechanism, instantly switching the date at midnight, setting it apart from earlier Datejust iterations.

During the five-digit era, references starting with 162XX, like this one, were fitted with the modern caliber 3135, while 160XX references utilized the earlier caliber 3035 – a small yet significant detail.

The dial on this Datejust has a beautifully patina, turning into a brown-ish colour.
